How to Stop Drinking Every Night as a Married Man

Don’t miss an episode. Get our podcast sent straight to your inbox every week.

It’s 6:10 p.m. The laptop is closed, the kids are somewhere in the house being loud, and your hand is already on the refrigerator door. You tell yourself the same thing you told yourself yesterday: you earned this.

By the third glass your wife is walking you through next week’s carpool schedule and you’re nodding at all the right moments. You couldn’t repeat one word of it. She knows. You know she knows. Nobody says anything, and the evening slides by like every other one this month.

Sound familiar?

The short answer

To stop drinking every night as a married man, replace the physical alcohol habit with a structured transition ritual between the workday and home. Married businessmen must install Alpha Decompression to downshift their nervous systems, establish non-negotiable dry boundaries, and rebuild personal capacity across the Five Territories using The Activation Method.

Why do you reach for a drink every single night?

Because it works, for about twenty minutes. That’s the honest answer, and I’d rather give you that than a lecture.

You spend ten hours making decisions, putting out fires and being the guy everybody needs. Then you walk into your own house and you’re supposed to flip into husband and dad with no ramp. A drink feels like the ramp. Shoulders drop. The noise in your head turns down.

The trouble is what happens after minute twenty. The first drink buys relief, the second buys you a habit, and by the third you’re physically in the room and mentally nowhere. (Doug 1.0 used the word “decompress” as a polite synonym for “pour.” My wife was too kind to say it out loud, which made it worse.)

The need is real. You do have to come down from the day. The tool you chose is the problem.

How much is too much for a married man?

Here’s a number you can check against. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) puts low-risk drinking for men at no more than 4 drinks on any single day and no more than 14 in a week. A standard drink is 12 ounces of regular beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. Pour yourself a “glass” of wine at home and measure it once. Most men are startled.

Totals matter, but I care more about the pattern. Run this test: skip tonight. Not forever, just tonight. If you feel irritated, restless, or start bargaining (“I’ll skip tomorrow instead”), you’ve learned something useful. A man who drinks by choice can say no without a negotiation.

No judgment from me. I’ve run that test on myself, and the bargaining was loud.

What is the nightly drink costing you?

Run the ledger.

Where It Shows Up What It Costs You The First Fix

Your Sleep

Knocked out fast, then fragmented second half; 3 a.m. cortisol and racing thoughts

Replace nightcap with sparkling water; zero alcohol 3 hours before bed

Your Body

Empty alcohol calories plus late-night junk food, sabotaging gym consistency

Drink a large glass of ice water and switch work clothes immediately upon arrival

Your Marriage

Physically present on the couch, emotionally numb and detached from your wife

Run 10 minutes of Alpha Decompression in the driveway before walking inside

Your Kids

Checking out during bedtime reading; short, irritable fuse between 7 and 9 p.m.

Establish a sober evening cutoff to remain present and responsive as a father

Your Mornings

Lethargic wakeups, skipped workouts, using excess caffeine to compensate

Install Alpha Rise & Shine at 6 a.m. with water, light movement, and goals

Look at the marriage row again. Your wife doesn't need a breathalyzer. She reads your attention, and she can tell the difference between a man who's relaxed and a man who's gone.

How do you replace the drink with Alpha Decompression?

Alpha Decompression is a 10-minute transition routine executed between the workday and home to reset the nervous system from executive stress to present family leadership. It’s the end-of-work routine we teach at The Powerful Man, and it exists for exactly this moment, the gap between the work version of you and the home version.

Here’s a version you can run tonight. Park the car and sit for five minutes with the phone face down. Breathe slowly, in through the nose for four counts, out for six. Name one thing you handled well today and one thing you’re leaving at the office until tomorrow. Then go inside, change out of your work clothes, and wash your face. Cold water helps.

Now you need something in your hand, because the hand wants a ritual as much as the brain does. Sparkling water with lime in a real glass. A cold non-alcoholic beer if you like the taste. Hot tea if it’s winter where you live. It sounds silly until you try it. The ritual stays and the alcohol goes.

Give it two weeks before you judge it. The first three nights feel awkward. By night ten, your shoulders drop at the front door without the glass.

Where does Alpha Rise & Shine come in?

Alpha Rise & Shine is a structured morning routine practiced by married businessmen to claim the first hour of the day through hydration, physical movement, and clear mental focus. It goes after the other end of the problem. A bad night’s sleep makes 6 p.m. feel like an emergency, so you reach for the drink to survive the evening, and you sleep badly again. Round and round.

Alpha Rise & Shine breaks the loop from the morning side. Water first. Ten minutes of movement. A few quiet minutes before the phone. Read your own goals out loud. A man who has already won the first hour of his day carries less pressure into the evening, and he has less to numb.

Here’s the practical trick: schedule a 6 a.m. commitment you hate to miss. A workout with a buddy works well. The glass at 9 p.m. suddenly has competition.

How do you use The Flip to set the rules?

The Flip is a decision-making framework that forces married businessmen to prioritize family and health commitments on the calendar before arranging professional demands around them. Instead of asking “how much can I get away with,” it asks “what did I say matters most, and what has to move to protect it?”

So write down what you want your evenings to be. Probably something like: present with my wife, patient with my kids, up early and strong. Now look at the nightly drink next to that list. It loses. You already know it loses.

Then set a rule you can keep. For most men I coach, it looks like this: dry on weeknights, and on weekends a cap of two. Pick your own numbers, write them on paper, and put the paper somewhere you’ll see it. A rule that lives only in your head gets renegotiated by the man holding the bottle.

Track it. Mark each dry day on a calendar on the fridge. You’ll be surprised how much a row of checkmarks matters to a competitive guy.

What should you tell your wife?

The truth, in one sentence, with no drama. Something like: “I’ve noticed I’m drinking more than I want to, and I’m cutting back. I’d like your help.”

Then use the Hidden Motives Technique and ask her what she’s seen. Don’t defend yourself. Listen for the need under what she says. A lot of wives have been quietly worried for months and holding it in because they didn’t want a fight. If she says “I miss you at night,” that’s the real reason to do this, and it’s a better one than a calorie count.

She’ll probably say less than you expect. Then she’ll watch what you do. Do it.

What about the guys, the client dinners and the golf weekends?

Order a club soda with lime. Nobody checks. I mean that. I’ve never once watched a man look at a lime wedge and ask a follow-up question.

If your whole social circle is built around the bar, that’s a bigger signal. The men in The Powerful Man Brotherhood meet over workouts, hikes and real conversation, and nobody keeps score of the drinks. Finding a few friends who like who you are with nothing in your hand is worth the effort.

When should you talk to a doctor?

If you drink heavily every day and you try to stop cold, talk to a doctor first. Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous, and a physician can guide you safely. The same goes if you’ve tried to cut back several times and keep failing, or if drinking has started to damage your health, your work or your marriage. Asking for medical help is a smart move, and plenty of strong men have made it.

FAQ

Why do I feel the urge to drink every night after work?

The nightly urge to drink is rarely a biological craving for alcohol itself. It is a learned neurological ritual to downshift from high-pressure executive decisions into home life. Because businessmen lack a formal boundary between the boardroom and the living room, they rely on alcohol as a chemical shortcut to force mental relaxation.

How do I stop drinking every night without going to rehab?

Most businessmen who drink habitually can break the cycle by changing their transition rituals, establishing hard calendar boundaries, and communicating transparently with their wives. Commit to a 14-day dry trial, execute Alpha Decompression daily before entering your home, and substitute alcohol with sparkling water or non-alcoholic alternatives.

Is a glass of wine or whiskey every night bad for high performers?

Yes, because chronic nightly alcohol consumption severely disrupts restorative REM and slow-wave sleep. Even moderate nightly drinking suppresses natural testosterone, elevates midnight cortisol, dulls morning cognitive acuity, and subtly erodes emotional presence with your spouse and children.

What should I drink instead of alcohol when I get home?

Keep a sensory-rich substitute in hand to satisfy the motor ritual: sparkling water with fresh lime in highball glassware, cold non-alcoholic craft beer, or hot herbal tea. Keeping a tactile, satisfying drink in hand fulfills the psychological comfort ritual while eliminating alcohol entirely.

How can I tell my wife I am cutting back on drinking?

Tell her directly in one calm sentence without defensiveness: “I’ve noticed I rely on a drink to shut off work, and it makes me absent with you; I’m stopping on weeknights.” Then use the Hidden Motives Technique to listen openly to how your evening detachment has impacted her.

Will cutting out alcohol hurt my client dinners or professional network?

No. High-level peers respect decisive discipline and sharp presence. Ordering soda water with lime at professional dinners draws zero scrutiny, keeps you in full command of high-stakes negotiations, and ensures you wake up prepared to win the next morning.

Where to go from here

Tonight, run the skip test. Park the car, take your five minutes, pour something without alcohol in it, and be in the room with your wife for the first hour. Check the calendar tomorrow and see what a dry night felt like.

Not sure where you stand? Take the TPM assessment to answer a few quick questions and get pointed to the right next step for where you are right now. It takes about three minutes.

The costs in that table land across more than one area of your life. The Five Territories framework is a capacity management model for married businessmen to evaluate, balance, and lead across Self, Health, Relationships, Wealth, and Business.

If you’re one of the married businessmen who keeps promising himself a change and quietly renegotiating it by 6 p.m., The Activation Method is where we start. It’s eight weeks of live coaching with Doug Holt or a Master Coach, and it rebuilds all Five Territories, Self and Health included, with routines that hold up on a bad Tuesday. Men who finish it and want more earn their place at The Alpha Reset, and from there the Brotherhood.

Your wife doesn’t need a perfect man. She needs the one who’s actually in the room.

As always, I’m in your corner.
